Sony VAIO FW Reviewed

Sony-VAIO-FW.jpg

A review of the Sony VAIO FW notebook PC has been posted over at Notebook Review. 'The fit and finish of the Sony VAIO FW is wonderful, and the overall design is beautiful. The notebook has a streamlined sculpted look, and when opened has a palmrest and keyboard surround that looks like the graceful sloping surface of a car hood. The surface starts out flat, has a small dip, and then gracefully slopes down to the screen hinges. From working day in and day out at a ThinkPad, it is much easier on the eyes to say the least.

Sony Vaio VGN-FW140 - CNET

Sony-Vaio-VGN-FW140.jpg

CNET have published a review of the Sony Vaio VGN-FW140 Centrino 2 laptop. 'Sony's new Vaio FW140 covers a few firsts for us. It's the first 16-inch laptop we've gotten our hands on--and the display's movie-friendly 16:9 aspect ratio will become more popular in the next year or two (we've already seen it in the excellent 18-inch Acer Aspire 8920). It's also the first laptop we've tested that's built on Intel's new Centrino 2 platform and features the new 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo P8400 processor.'

Sony VAIO VGN-SZ791N – PC World

VAIO-VGN-SZ791N.jpg

PC World have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-SZ791N Notebook. ‘The 4-pound Sony VAIO VGN-SZ791N falls somewhere between a beefy ultraportable and an all-purpose laptop. Thanks to its Intel 2.5-GHz Core 2 Duo T9300 CPU (a Penryn-class processor that we see in some desktop-replacement notebooks) and its nVidia 8400GS graphics card, the SZ smoked our WorldBench 6 performance tests with a score of 94. Among all-purpose notebooks, even Lenovo's ThinkPad R61 and Fujitsu's LifeBook A6120 couldn't match that number.

Sony VAIO VGN-TZ31MN Review – Trusted Reviews

Sony-VAIO-VGN-TZ31MN.jpg

Trusted Reviews have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ31MN ultra-portable Notebook PC. ‘On the surface the TZ31M looks identical to the TZ11MN that I reviewed a year ago, but believe me when I say that this isn't a bad thing. The VAIO TZ series really does represent the pinnacle of notebook design right now. The form factor is perfect, the finish is first rate and the design stylish - and the fact that the TZ is essentially an evolution of the VAIO TX series is nothing to worry about either, since the TX machines were also head and shoulders above the competition at the time.

Sony VAIO VGN-NR21Z/T Review – Trusted Reviews

Sony-VAIO-VGN-NR21Z-T.jpg

Trusted Reviews have published a review of the affordable Sony VAIO VGN-NR21Z/T notebook. ‘As far as size goes it's a 15.4in notebook, so it's neither the most portable or least portable out there. It must be noted, though, that it weighs more than the Inspiron 1525 at just a fraction over 2.9kg compared to the 2.7kg of the Dell. It's a shade thicker too, with a minimum of 31.4mm growing to 37.9mm at the thickest point in its wedge shaped design. This, compared to the 25 to 37mm of the Dell, makes it noticeably chunkier, though not unpleasantly so.

Sony VAIO VGN-TZ295N Review - PC World

Sony-VAIO-VGN-TZ295N.jpg

PC World have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ295N ultraportable laptop. 'Roughly the size of a hardcover book and weighing about 2.6 pounds (3.2 pounds with an AC adapter), Sony's tight little package comes with some solid business features. Among the work-specific highlights: a fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth connectivity, and integrated wireless WAN through Sprint Mobile Broadband. These features are increasingly commonplace, but supporting EvDO Revision A wireless data transfers makes this an instant win for Sprint customers--but a tease for Verizon and AT&T loyalists. Sony doesn't allow you to configure the VGN-TZ295N to your preferences, so if you buy it, you're paying for the Sprint-specific hardware whether you like it or not.'

Sony Vaio AR Review - InfoSync World

Sony-Vaio-AR.jpg

InfoSync World have published a review of the Sony Vaio AR multimedia laptop. 'The Sony Vaio AR is a slick black behemoth of a laptop. Though most devices in this category go by the "Desktop Replacement" moniker, the Vaio AR will replace your desktop, as well as a few components of your home stereo. The glossy black case resisted fingerprints as well as a glossy black case can, but this isn't a machine you'll be handling much, thanks to its girth. Most ports on the device are hidden, and Sony uses a nearly-unbroken, mirrored band to add continuity to the case design.

Sony Vaio PCG-U3 Review - The Gadgeteer

Sony-Vaio-PCG-U3.jpg

The Gadgeteer have published a review of the Sony Vaio PCG-U3 UMPC. 'The Sony U1 is the first in the line of U series and was followed by the Sony U3, and later the U101. The U3 is a compact laptop with many ports and a fantastic screen. It's small enough to fit in a briefcase or large purse and is only 1.8 lbs. with the standard battery. If you take 2 DVD cases and stack them together, that about how big the U3 is. The screen is 6.4 inches in size and is viewable from many angles. The unit has 1 Type II PCMCIA slot, 1 Magicgate memory stick slot, 2 usb ports, a firewire port, and external monitor port for VGA output. The unit is too small like most UMPC devices to have a Optical drive, but there are many examples of external optical drives that will work with this unit.'

Sony VAIO VGN-CR13GW Review – PC Authority

Sony-VAIO-VGN-CR13GW.jpg

PC Authority have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-CR13GW laptop. ‘In addition to its good looks, the CR13 exhibits the build quality we’ve come to expect from Sony. It feels solid, with no obvious weak points in the chassis. The shiny finish on the lid feels as though it should prevent the odd scratch, although you’ll still need to look after it to keep it looking its best. Complementing its good looks and sturdy construction, the CR13GR (the ‘R’ denotes the fiery red finish) is well specified. Its 100GB hard disk is decent and there’s fair news on the performance front.

Review: Sony Vaio VGN-AR41L - IT Reviews

Sony-Vaio-VGN-AR41L.jpg

IT Reviews have published a review of the Sony Vaio VGN-AR41L desktop replacement PC. 'Powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 processor clocked at 1.8GHz, the VGN-AR41L isn't going to win any performance awards but it will do all the usual mundane office jobs without any problems. And with the processor being dual core, at least you can run jobs like virus scans in the background without taking too much of a hit in foreground performance. Supporting the processor is 2GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory which is the about the standard fitment these days in a notebook with Vista installed (the VGN-AR41L comes with Vista Home Premium); in any case this is the maximum amount of memory that the motherboard supports.'

Sony VAIO VGN-N31M/W Review - Pocket Lint

Sony-VAIO-VGN-N31M-W.jpg

A review of the Sony VAIO VGN-N31M/W entry level Notebook has been posted over at Pocket Lint. 'The look of the notebook is impressive. The white plastic case with silver keyboard is certainly striking and the feel of it when closed is solid and robust. Most of this rigidity is in the lid, which neatly protects the screen. Open the lid up though and you’ll find the body of the machine isn’t quite so solid. The screen is well protected and being a 15.4-inch Super-TFT panel, which Sony refers to as X-black, it’s great for movies as well as viewing multiple documents. While such panels have a truer range of colours than standard TFT screens, making them ideal for watching DVDs and viewing digital photos, we found this machine had a very narrow brightness range. While this isn’t a problem when sat at your desk, you won’t get the best view from it when out and about.'

Sony VAIO VGN-TZ18GNX Notebook Review - PC Authority

Sony-VAIO-VGN-TZ18GNX.jpg

PC Authority have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ18GNX Notebook. 'If the TZ18 looks familiar, that’s because it’s the spitting image of the TZ17, which graced these pages just two months ago. We can’t complain, as this version is as desirable as the original, but Sony has made a major change under the covers. Gone is the 100GB hard disk of the TZ17, replaced by a 32GB Samsung solid-state disk (SSD) – one of the very first laptops to contain what some consider the death knell for mechanical hard disks. We’re yet to be convinced by that, but SSD does have a number of advantages over mechanical disks, which, for all their tried-and-tested years, still rely on precision moving parts. As they’re prone to physical stress, extra layers such as head-parking software become necessary, and a single, heavy blow can render the whole disk extinct. Also, seek times are higher because of the need to get a physical head to a specific place on a disk. And, in a product where battery life is the name of the game, SSDs take up significantly less power than their spinning equivalents.'

Sony VAIO VGN-NR17G Notebook Review - CNET Asia

Sony-VAIO-VGN-NR17G.jpg

CNET Asia have published a review of the affordable Sony VAIO VGN-NR17G Notebook. 'Sony VAIO VGN-NR17G (Core 2 Duo T7300 Processor 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM) 'Like the rest of the Sony VAIO laptop family, the VGN-NR17G has a large VAIO logo embossed on the back of the lid, clearly advertising your brand preference to anyone sitting nearby. The biggest difference between this and other VAIOs is the textured plastic that covers everything except the screen bezel and bottom surface. It's not the worst look in the world, but it feels cheap compared to the design-oriented mix of metal and plastic materials found on other VAIO laptops. At only 33mm thick, it's slightly slimmer than Sony's 15-inch home theater laptop, the VAIO VGN-FZ18G, but heavier, by nearly 220g.'

Sony TZ (VGN-TZ191N) Notebook Reviewed

Sony-TZ-VGN-TZ191N.jpg

A review of the Sony TZ (VGN-TZ191N) ultraportable Notebook has been posted over at Notebook Review. 'Sony's designers worked overtime to make the TZ not only an ultra portable notebook, but to make it an ultra portable notebook that looks good. Lines match up, panel thicknesses stay the same, hinges are molded into body with the battery, AC plug, and power button integrated, and it's topped off with a carbon fiber lid to seal the deal. Lifting the display cover you find the glossy keyboard surface reflecting the world around you with keys standing out like ripples on a pond. This notebook could be perfectly described in one word; glamorous.

Sony VAIO VGN-TZ150N Review – PC Mag

Sony-VAIO-VGN-TZ150N.jpg

PC Magazine have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ150N ultraportable. ‘The TZ150N is essentially a refresh of the TX Series, replacing the ever-so-tiny Sony VAIO VGN-TXN15P. In Sony's latest ultraportable, the TXN15P's foundation is kept intact. The frame is still less than an inch thick, an optical drive continues to reside in the system, and "featherweight" can still be used to describe its 2.7-pound body. But it's no longer the lightest ultraportable with an optical drive; that honor belongs to the Toshiba Portégé R500 Series (at 2.4 pounds). Still, Sony gives the TZ150N a touch of class by redesigning everything surrounding the frame. Black is the standard color, but you can customize the lid with a Champagne Gold or a Bordeaux Red finish for $300 more.’

Sony VAIO VGN-TZ11XN Review at Pocket-Lint

Sony-VAIO-VGN-TZ11XN.jpg

A review of the Sony VAIO VGN-TZ11XN ultraportable notebook has been posted over at Pocket-Lint. 'This machine won’t satisfy the everyman looking for a bargain because at £1799 (inc. VAT) it’s out of most people’s price expectations. However, if you’re looking for something a little different this has to be it. Weighing in at 1.2kg, it’s small and compact enough to slip in your typical briefcase, so you don’t need to be seen to be walking around with a laptop bag, which cuts down on the theft factor. The reason for it’s low weight is the miniaturisation of the motherboard that still allows you to get all the normal features of a computer but in a reduced size. What makes this compact size equally impressive is that you’ll find a DVD rewriter built-in.'

This is the first dual core ULV chip that Intel has produced and despite the fact that it still runs on the older 533MHz bus, it will still provide significantly improved performance over the previous TX machines. Sony VAIO VGN-AR590E Notebook Review at Laptop Mag

Sony-VAIO-VGN-AR590E.jpg

Laptop Magazine have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-AR590E feature-rich Notebook. ‘At 8.4 pounds, this system is a bit heavy but easy to move from room to room. We recommend you place this VAIO where it can be seen when guests drop by. The VGN-AR590E is a model of minimalist elegance, sporting a glossy, piano-black finish highlighted by silver trim. Just be sure a polishing cloth is handy; the notebook lid picks up fingerprints in a hurry. The machine's wide base offers ample space for comfortably positioning your hands when typing on the roomy keyboard. We like that the keys are low to the base, similar to the Apple MacBook, and that they offer solid, responsive tactile feedback.’

A review of the Sony VAIO VGN-FZ18G (Core 2 Duo T7500 Processor 2.2GHz, 1GB RAM) Notebook has been posted over at CNET Asia. ‘Like much of the Sony VAIO laptop family, the VGN-FZ18G has a large VAIO logo embossed on the back of the lid, while the sharp, angular case eschews the recent trend toward soft, rounded edges. At only 34.5mm thick, it's slimmer than other recent 15-inch media-friendly laptops, such as the HP Pavilion dv6500 and the Dell Inspiron 6400. Sony's flat-key keyboard is among our favorite laptop keyboards, but we wish the tiny touchpad mouse buttons were a little more substantial. Keeping with the multimedia theme, there's a four-way click-wheel above the keyboard that acts as a media control hub, offering fast-forward, rewind, play, and volume controls.’

Sony VAIO TX850p – Notebook Review

Sony-VAIO-TX850p.jpg

Kellen Steffen writing over at Notebook Review has posted a review of the Sony VAIO TX850p Notebook. ‘Aesthetic design is one of the TX series' best attributes. The keyboard and lower potion of the laptop is a cool grey supporting a razor-thin black screen housing. The case is made of carbon fiber, which allows for both flexible strength and light weight (Sony quotes 2.75lbs with the standard battery). Sony has managed to squeeze a ton of features and gadgets into this tiny machine, and yet I find the placement of the various ports, switches, and buttons to be absolutely optimal, and they look good, too. The power button, which is translucent and lights up green when the laptop's on, is located on a raised hump near the bottom of the screen, along with a row of other multimedia buttons and an soft-eject button for the optical drive. The Wi-Fi/Bluetooth switch as well as mute and volume +/- buttons are located at the front, just below the right hand when typing; they're functional and solid. Props to Sony for this.’

Sony VAIO VGN-SZ370P - PC Mag

Sony-VAIO-VGN-SZ370P.jpg

PC Magazine have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-SZ370P ultraportable PC. 'The SZ370P measures 12.5 by 9.2 by 1.0 inches, which is longer than competing ultraportables, but don't let the dimensions fool you. The scant frame integrates components virtually unheard of in a machine this size. Sony laptop screens are among the thinnest in the world, and you'll be blown away by the brilliant colors this one produces. The 13.3-inch XBrite screen is about an inch larger than the 12-inch ones found on the Dell XPS M1210 (Vista) and the Panasonic CF-W5. As for protection, the carbon fiber material surrounding the frame looks smooth and exotic, but it isn't as tough as the metals found on the ThinkPad X60 (Vista) and Toughbook CF-W5. If you tap on it lightly, you can actually feel the frame's hollowness.'

Sony VAIO VGN-UX27GN - PC Authority

Sony-VAIO-VGN-UX27GN.jpg

PC authority have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-UX27GN ultra-mobile personal computer. 'The UX27 comes with Vista Business as standard, so you get the specially designed Tablet PC tools. These are capable enough to avoid needing to use the inevitably fiddly keyboard for even awkward tasks such as entering website addresses. Sony backs this up with a dedicated hardware button for a stylus-friendly application launcher – much easier to use than the Windows Start menu. The two mouse buttons to the left also give enough control over the more advanced areas of Windows. With the slide-down keyboard, mouse buttons and Vista modification, the UX27 is vastly more usable than the Samsung Q1-SSD, particularly when the latter is separated from its portable keyboard. And the unit sits much more comfortably in the hand than the Q1-SSD.'

PC Authority have published a review of the feature-rich Sony VAIO VGN-G118GNB mobile notebook. 'The streamlined chassis and 4mm-thick screen, made of carbon-fibre laminate, is stunning. There’s even an Apple-like design touch to the optical drive’s eject button, which finds its home at the top-right- hand side of the chassis (fear not, there’s also a more traditionally placed button on the drive itself). The DVD writer itself is compatible with all kinds of media, including DVD-RAM. We were also impressed to see a 100GB hard disk inside. The 1.8in Toshiba disk uses perpendicular recording to pack in such a high capacity, and Toshiba claims the drive consumes just 1.1W while seeking.

Peter Toth writing over at Notebook Review has posted a review of the Core 2 Duo and Nvidia Go 7600 powered Sony VAIO FE-91S notebook PC. 'I purchase the VAIO FE on the Sony Japan website as I wanted to configure it to my needs. The final cost was 214,000 Japanese Yen, which is around $2,000 US dollars. This included the computer and a Sony Protection plan of 3 years. If something were to happen with the laptop Sony would pickup the machine and return it upon fixing the problem. It seemed like a good deal for the latest technology, and a better price than I would have got in Hungary. After I ordered the laptop online it took 2 weeks for delivery.'

PC Magazine have published a review of the Sony VAIO VGN-TXN15P ultraportable PC. 'The VAIO TXN15P is just an inch thick (10.7 by 7.5 by 1 inch, HWD), and at 2.8 pounds, puts precious little extra weight on your shoulders. When it comes to materials engineering, Sony isn't shy about using the latest trends. The lid is made up of carbon fiber, which is light, sturdy, and moldable. Just look at the cracker-thin screen that folds on top of the keyboard like a piece of paper. And don't think for a minute that the thinness of the screen compromises the brightness, because the 11.1-inch XBrite widescreen can light up an entire room like a fresh new bulb. Sony-VAIO-UX-Premium-VGN-UX390N.jpg

Laptop Magazine have reviewed the Sony VAIO UX Premium VGN-UX390N ultra-portable with Windows Vista Business Edition installed. 'Like its predecessor, the UX390N weighs a mere 1.2 pounds and is only 5.9 inches wide and 1.3 to 1.5 inches thick (depending on battery size); a little too big for pocket travel but still highly portable. This model sports an all-black casing and features a brightly lit 4.5-inch widescreen touch display with a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution. The screen slides up to reveal a 64-button keyboard that is certainly spacious enough for thumb typing but lacks tactile response. That, coupled with the fact that the keys are virtually flat against the surface, makes entering keystrokes with any kind of speed difficult. On the upside, the keyboard is backlit, making it easy to read in the dark.'

Slide the 4.5-inch screen up, exposing the keyboard, and the system is 5.25 inches deep. 'Our test sample came in an attractive sky blue - or “Rediscovery” blue as Sony likes it to be known - with the four other finishes being “Karma” white, “Natura” green, “Free Spirit” pink and “Timeless” black. Sony is certainly pushing the individuality angle here, with each colour intended to appeal to those who want to make a statement with their notebook. CNET have published their review of the ultraportable Sony VAIO TXN17P/B notebook with Windows Vista Business Edition installed. 'Measuring 10.8 inches wide, 8 inches deep, and 1.2 inches high, the TXN17 is among the smallest ultraportables we've seen. It's tiny enough to carry around without much hassle, but the small screen and the cramped keyboard will be uncomfortable for extended use. The Sony VAIO TXN17 weighs 2.9 pounds (3.6 pounds with the AC adapter), which is extremely light when you consider the system has a built-in optical drive, something many smaller laptops omit to save on weight and bulk. The Asus S6F features a similar footprint and an optical drive but is noticeably thicker.
