Computer hardware intended for the consumer market consists of all-in-one PCs, desktops, laptops, notebooks, netbooks and more recently tablet PCs. Most computer manufactures put out new configurations of personal computer hardware on a yearly basis. Popular brand names include Acer, Apple, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sony, MSI and Toshiba.
Computer Hardware Explained
Desktop: A desktop computer is one you buy to use in a location such as a living room, den or study. The desktop computer consists of a tower (CPU) which contains an electronic device designed to accept data and perform prescribed mathematical and logical operations at high speed. The desktop sits on the desk where you input data via a keyboard and have the results displayed on a screen (monitor). Typical Users; Family members, individuals and small businesses.
All-in-one Computer: An All-in-one computer is a desktop computer which combines the CPU and speaker into the same case as the monitor. Recent configurations of All-In-Ones' have integrated touch screens where you can manipulate data both with keyboard and monitor. Typical Users: Family members; individuals; small businesses.
Laptop: A laptop is a portable computer hence the components of the desktop including the display, keyboard are built into a case which folds shut to allow the user to move around with the device. The laptop can be powered either by an internal battery or by mains electricity via an AC adapter. A laptop incorporates a touchpad or trackpad which acts as a pointing device. Notebook: Notebook computers are similar to laptops however they tend to be lighter and unlike the typical laptop is geared more to the mobile user.
Netbook: Netbooks are in the same league as laptops and notebooks however they were designed to be ultra portable and affordable hence they are essentially small notebooks.
Tablets: A Tablet Computer is a mobile computer which is little bigger than your typical smartphone. A tablet's primary feature is its flat touch screen which is operated by touching the screen rather than using a physical keyboard as other computers. Typical Users: individuals; small businesses,
